Wetplate Portrait Session The session lasts 1-2 hours, and we'll shoot at least 4 and maybe 5 or 6 plates. (Each plate takes about 20 minutes start to finish.) Plates can be 8"x8", 5"x7", or 4"x5". You can mix sizes if you like. You get to keep your favorite three plates, with the option to purchase any others that we shoot at $25 each. This session gives us time to try different looks or compositions, and also allows for group and individual photos if there are multiple people.
The wetplate (tintype) process was discovered in the mid 1800's and was the predominant photography process for 30-40 years. It's shown a bit of a revival lately. Each plate is quite unique, and extremely archival. Plates from the mid 1800's exist today, so we know the plates will last in excess of 170 years.
The process requires a lot of light, so sessions need to start 2-3 hours before sunset, or earlier. Exposure times start around 2 seconds and can go as long as 10-15 seconds on cloudy days. Because of this, small children and animals often end up showing some blur or movement. I'm always willing to give it a shot, just be aware of the possibility of blur in the final plate.
After the session is over, I'll need to wash, dry, and varnish the plate(s), so you won't be able to take the plates home with you. Included in the price is postage by US Mail. After your plate is dry, I will also make a digital scan of your plate and email that to you for sharing however you like.
