It’s my favorite time of year….high school senior “season” :-). And first up for you this year is Hadley. MCHS Class of 2015.
I also shot a bit of film during her session, Portra 400. I love the look of film, it just has a different look from digital….can’t really explain it….

I’ve missed doing pre-prom photos since Ellen is no longer prom age, so it was nice when Tristan asked if I would do a few photos of he and Ailee before this year’s MCHS Prom. I warned him that mine wouldn’t be the traditional before-the-prom photos, and he was totally into that :-). They were eating dinner on Davis St in Culpeper, so that’s where we did most of the photos, all of the ones below. Anyway, here are a few.
You’ll recognize a few of these Davis St locations from some of my other photos….they’re too good to pass up.

Ok, too good not to share. I took portraits again this year at Madison Primary’s “Fun with your Fellow”. As a surprise for the boys, I brought out the quadcopter near the end hoping to shoot a bit of video of them. Well, what happened next, you just have to see :-). I could have led those boys all over the county chasing that thing!! I’ve edited the video a bit to make it a little shorter, but didn’t cut out anything important 🙂

There are two sections in the gallery, “Candids” and “Portraits”. “Candids” are a few photos I shot of the kids painting t-shirts and a little bit of dancing. “Portraits” are the ones we shot on the bench out front. I’ve been doing some portraits of our local artists, all members of the Firnew Farm Artists Circle. I’m also a member, so mine is below too :-). These are updates for the website, and for the artist’s use also. All are natural light, mostly digital but some film also. These people are crazy good at what they do. Most all are painters, but they let in the occasional photographer too ;-). Click any of the photos below to go to the website and check out their work. There’s also information on upcoming shows. If you’re not on Instagram, you probably should be :-). It’s my preferred place to share photos. So anyway, Instagram posts a Weekend Hashtag Project. The idea being to post photos with a particular theme, and tag them with the appropriate hashtag so others can find them. For this weekend, it was #WHPchairaffair. From their post, “The goal this weekend is to capture beautiful and creative photos of an everyday object: chairs. Some tips to get you started: Chairs come in all shapes and sizes. Look for a unique chair or a chair you find particularly beautiful and photograph it in a way that emphasizes its lines and shape. Think about the significance of an empty chair and the story you want your photo to tell. A single chair on its own can be inviting or lonely. You can also arrange a group of chairs to imply a different kind of story. Finally, setting can be very important for this project. A simple or solid-color background will emphasize the shape of the chair. The chair’s natural setting (a home, restaurant or office for example) can help tell its story, but don’t be afraid to take a chair to an unlikely setting to create a surprising scene.”
I’ve rarely done these, but we were hunting for some furniture for Ellen’s apartment next year at W&M, and I found a few that I liked. I only moved a couple of these. Most were photographed exactly as I found them.
And, I LOVE this last one for some reason….
Taylor and her mom came by a few weeks ago. Taylor is the reigning Little Miss Lynchburg 2014, and needed an updated headshot for the Miss Virginia program. We did some photos indoors in my little “studio”, and also went outdoors for some. It was one of the RARE warm days this winter!
These last two are black and white film. We’d finished the session and I asked if she’d mind doing a few more just so I could shoot a little bit of film. All of her pictures were just fantastic. She just doesn’t take a bad photo. But this first one below just blows me away. It’s one of my favorite photos of all time.
….okay, you can call it a “drone” if you like. I’ve just had it a few days so I’m still learning to fly. The photos are from a GoPro HD Hero camera, which is one of GoPro’s earliest cameras. I’ve had that for quite a while, but had no way to get it up in the air :-). Below are a few video clips pieced together….mostly to show you what NOT to do! DON’T try to learn to fly in the woods!! An open field is MUCH better!
And a few photos from today. Not a very photogenic day, but I was anxious to get out and fly around. (The GoPro has a VERY wide angle lens. These have been corrected in Lightroom to remove the curvature that is the result of that lens. That’s why you see a bit of blurring in the lower corners. Maybe I shouldn’t have done that, but I like my horizons flat.)

And finally, here’s a video from YouTube, NOT MINE, that was shot by a pro wedding photographer. He uses the aerial footage in the introduction of his wedding videos to showcase the wedding venues. Pretty cool!!! It’ll be a while before I have the guts to fly over water!! 🙂
Most of these you’ve seen on Facebook or Instagram, a few you haven’t. I never seem to get around to posting them here. If you’re tired of winter, you may not want to look since there are some snow photos in there 🙂 (All of these were taken with a DSLR, no iPhone photos. Those will be in a different post.)
Regarding the two above, when you get a new camera, the first thing you should do is set the date and time!! 🙁
