The plan was to shoot outdoors, but the weather had other ideas.  Since it had been raining off and on in the afternoon, I assumed we’d be indoors….don’t want to ruin the dresses in wet grass, so I was prepared.  JUST as the girls got inside, the skies opened up.  Whew!  Good timing!  And I’m actually glad we shot indoors.  I think we ended up with more posing options.  All of these were taken with off-camera flash bounced into the wall/ceiling behind me.

Start them out smiling because that’s what they’re more comfortable with…..

….and then you get this when you ask them to not smile….  🙂

The “deer head” room was not in the plan…..but somehow we ended up there 🙂

First a “Thanks!” to the Duncans for coming over for my little experiment.  I’ve been wanting to shoot a film-only session for a while now and they were kind enough to come over an model for me one afternoon.  Working with older film cameras is a totally different experience than shooting digital.  The camera is manual focus so that slows things down a bit.  I have to stop to change film every 12 frames.  But, I like all of that.  I like taking a little more time between photos.

For the film heads out there, most of these are Portra 800 overexposed two stops (so shot at E.I. 200).  I did also shoot one roll of Portra 400 (at E.I. 200).  The overexposure gives those nice saturated colors and warm tones you see below.  This was a overcast day, but the film really “warmed it up” 🙂   I didn’t touch the photos below, these are straight scans from the lab.

File these under “Foggy Morning Senior Pictures”.  The little bit of fog in the background was perfect for pictures.  It was definitely worth getting up early for.  These first two are digital, the rest are film.

If all of my film photos turned out as good as the ones below, I’d give up digital for portraits.  I still don’t trust myself enough with film, but I couldn’t be happier with the way these look.  And, Caitlin had A LOT more to do with that than the film did.  She was just perfect.

I’ve been shooting at least one roll of black and white film at my recent senior sessions.  I develop and scan the black and white film myself, so there’s a quick turn around time.  The photo below is color, Ektar 100.  I have to send that off to be developed and scanned, which takes at least a week, I rarely have patience for that! 🙂  But, I do love the tones of color film.  I guess I just need to work on the patience thing….

I’ve missed doing pre-prom photos since Ellen is no longer prom age, so it was nice when Tristan asked if I would do a few photos of he and Ailee before this year’s MCHS Prom.  I warned him that mine wouldn’t be the traditional before-the-prom photos, and he was totally into that :-).  They were eating dinner on Davis St in Culpeper, so that’s where we did most of the photos, all of the ones below.  Anyway, here are a few.

This photo right here….one of my favorites of all time!!!!!!!!!!

You’ll recognize a few of these Davis St locations from some of my other photos….they’re too good to pass up.
