We took a little road trip over Christmas break, leaving on December 29 and traveling to Hilton Head Island.  Stayed there a couple of nights, spent New Years Eve in Savannah, GA.  Then continued on to Panama City Beach on New Years Day.  Stayed there for four chilly windy days, then returned with a couple of night’s stay in Charleston, SC.

Java Burrito on HHI, one of your two favorite places to eat on Hilton Head. Think Chipolte on steriods :-). The food seems “fresher”, they serve breakfast, and there’s a coffee bar.

I’ve known about this for a little while, I’ve followed its construction on Eliot Dudik’s Instagram feed.  From his website, Eliot is “….founding the photography program within the Department of Art and Art History at the College of William & Mary where he is currently teaching and directing the Andrews Gallery at the college.”  It’s really great to see, especially considering that I was on the College yearbook (Colonial Echo) staff as a photographer when I was a student there in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

If you don’t know what a Camera Obscura is, here’s a little description from Widipedia:   “A camera obscura (Latin for “dark room”) is an optical device that led to photography and the photographic camera. The device consists of a box or room with a hole in one side. Light from an external scene passes through the hole and strikes a surface inside, where it is reproduced, inverted (thus upside-down), but with color and perspective preserved.”

Also from Wiki:  “The earliest extant written record of the camera obscura is to be found in the writings of Mozi (470 to 390 BC), a Chinese philosopher and the founder of Mohism. Mozi correctly asserted that the image in a camera obscura is flipped upside down because light travels in straight lines from its source. His disciples developed this into a minor theory of optics.”

So, I finally went down to see it yesterday.  I’ve known about Camera Obscura’s for quite a while, but this is my first experience actually seeing one.

The photo above is of the back side of the camera.  This camera has three “lenses” that each focus the image onto a different plane inside the camera, giving a somewhat panoramic view of the scene you see above.  The photos below are what you see when you’re inside the camera…..once your eyes adjust :-).  It’s pitch black when you first walk in, you sort of have to feel your way in….and hope no one else is in there 🙂

If you follow on Instagram, you’ll know I’ve been shooting a bit of film, mostly black and white, at portrait sessions for a while now, but I’ve never done a session completely on film, particularly black and white.  Film has such a different “look” than digital, and I get a little bored with the look of digital from time to time.  I really like the look and feel of these.  And I thank the Brockmans for putting up with me for a half hour or so last week so I can work out some of my crazy ideas.

For anyone interested, these were shot with a medium format Hasselblad on Tri-X 120 film, developed in HC-110b, and scanned on an Epson V600.  I do all the processing and scanning of black and white film at home, color film I have to send off to a lab.

The plan was to shoot outdoors, but the weather had other ideas.  Since it had been raining off and on in the afternoon, I assumed we’d be indoors….don’t want to ruin the dresses in wet grass, so I was prepared.  JUST as the girls got inside, the skies opened up.  Whew!  Good timing!  And I’m actually glad we shot indoors.  I think we ended up with more posing options.  All of these were taken with off-camera flash bounced into the wall/ceiling behind me.

Start them out smiling because that’s what they’re more comfortable with…..



….and then you get this when you ask them to not smile….  🙂















The “deer head” room was not in the plan…..but somehow we ended up there 🙂
