Tanner Family on Wet Plate

This process has me hooked! Each image is a lot of work, and I never really know how it will turn out, but that’s also what makes the process so much fun. If I wanted reliable and perfect, I can just shoot digital 😉 With this process, you learn to accept, and love, the imperfections. Each image is handmade, and unique.

We shot 9 images in a little over two hours. Eight are shared here, we had one “blinker” and I won’t share that one.

From a quote I just read recently in Sally Mann’s “a thousand crossings”: “When I was shooting with collodion, I wasn’t just snapping picture, I was fashioning, with fetishistic ceremony, and object whose ragged black edges gave it the appearance of having been torn from time itself.” WHOA!

5×7 Tintype, our first image. I was worried if I had enough strobe power to cover 5 people. Quite happy to see it worked out.

5×7 Ambrotype. An ambrotype is the exact same process as a tintype, but is shot on glass. Mine are shot on glass that was given to me by a friend. This glass used to be a greenhouse, so I’m doing some recycling 🙂

4×5 tintype. Switched to a black background, and I think I prefer it to white. Feels a little 3D.
4×5 tintype. That’s bad developer pour on the right side of the image. I’d be slightly happier if it wasn’t there, but with this process, you embrace the imperfections. If you don’t like the imperfections, this process isn’t for you.

If you’ve made it this far, and are interested in a portrait session with the wet plate process, send me a message. You’ll need to allow at least an hour for the session, but you’ll get to see the whole process from start to finish….and, it’s pretty cool! And, I’m just shooting these indoors right now with A LOT of strobe power, you can actually feel a little heat from the blast of flash. So, be aware. Not sure how small children would react to that. It won’t hurt you, but is a bit surprising the first few times.

Technical details….if you’re interested: Collodion is from Bostich and Sullivan, the “Old Workhorse” formula, and is about 3 months old. It’s a bit slow but the contrast is really nice. Cameras used: the 5×7’s were shot on a Burke and James 5×7 camera with an 18cm Heliar f/4.5 lens. The 4×5 plates were shot on a Crown Graphic with the stock Graflex Optar f/4.7 lens. Strobes are two Paul C Buff X3200’s, one in a silver beauty dish, the other in Buff’s 11″ long throw reflector, with couple of Buff Einstein’s as separation/kicker lights.

Tintype Workshop at VisArts in Richmond

On June 2nd and 3rd I took a tintype workshop at the Visual Arts Center in Richmond.  This was my first time trying the wet plate process.  I’ve shot just about everything else, so I guess it was time :-).  It was taught by Michael Bartolotta.  He teaches several tintype workshops each year.  So, if you’re interested in the process, I’d highly recommend his workshop.  He gave a brief history, gave a demo of the process, and we were off shooting.  I have a 4×5 view camera that I’d bought back in the 80’s, so I brought that along.  But he has several cameras for class members to use, so you need not bring anything other than yourself.

Here are a few of the images I made in the two day workshop.  (the color of the scans varies somewhat, and that’s due to my scanning.  The plates have a slight sepia tint after they are dried and varnished)

First plate 🙂 Exposure was pretty good for my first guess. 8 seconds at f/8

Second plate. I used a gold reflector to push a bit of light into the dark part of the flower arrangement.

We were fighting rain all weekend, so we started inside. The rain stopped for a bit, so I found this view off the balcony on the back of the building.

Mannequins in the fabric studio downstairs. It had started raining again, so I’d gone looking for indoor subjects.

First plate on day 2. I was planning a self portrait and shot this first plate as a light test.

I tried a reflection photo in the door…with somewhat sucky results.

There was a glass blowing class going on at Visarts the same weekend. I turned the camera around from the self portrait and shot a plate of the class in action.

Mike was shooting a portrait of one of the other class members, so I set the camera up for this somewhat “behind the scenes” photo.

The way the silver lays on this blue glass is just The way the silver lays on this blue glass is just incredible. You can’t really tell from the scan, you may be able to see it a tiny bit better in the video (second slide). 
I’m not sure these can ever be displayed properly to show them the way they need to be seen. Framing doesn’t seem to work, there needs to be light behind and all around them.  I have a few ideas, but I need to learn some new stuff first.

Slide 1:  cuprotype over cyanotype. 6 minute exposure for the cyanotype, acid development, wash and let it dry. Coat with cuprotype solution, let it dry, expose the cuprotype for 24 minutes. Wash. 

Slide 2:  same as above but after the last cuprotype wash, I toned it for one minute with  2% potassium ferricyanide

Cuprotype over cyanotype. It comes out of the uv e Cuprotype over cyanotype. It comes out of the uv exposure box with the mustard yellow of a cuprotype but once in the wash, the darks go green. The image here is with no toning to the cuprotype. 

I don’t yet know how I’ll use this combination of printing processes, but I like what I’m getting here better than straight cuprotypes. I do find it very cool that I’m able to get these colors and color combos from a monochrome glass negative. It’s something I’ve been looking for after my adventures with tri color cyanotype. I love the look of tri color cyanotype, but it requires a computer and I like staying away from those things. 😎

Cyanotype over toned cuprotype followed by about 3 Cyanotype over toned cuprotype followed by about 30 seconds of bleach just to decrease the intensity of the blue in the highlights. 
Next up is to reverse the process and print cuprotype over cyanotype. Chemically, I think that’s the better way to do it, but we shall see ‘cause I don’t know what I’m doing 🤓

From Wiki: “A hydraulic ram pump, ram pump, or hydram, is a cyclic water pump powered by hydropower. It takes in water at one “hydraulic head” (pressure) and flow rate, and outputs water at a higher hydraulic head and lower flow rate. The device uses the water hammer effect to develop pressure that allows a portion of the input water that powers the pump to be lifted to a point higher than where the water originally started. The hydraulic ram is sometimes used in remote areas, where there is both a source of low-head hydropower and a need for pumping water to a destination higher in elevation than the source. In this situation, the ram is often useful, since it requires no outside source of power other than the kinetic energy of flowing water.”

The pump works at approximately a 7:1 ratio, for every one foot of drop in the water feed line, the pump is able to pump 7 feet of lift! (I don’t know how much fall we have, nor the height we’re lifting the water, but it’s pumping way more water than we need for irrigation 😳) As of today, it’s been running a couple of weeks with no intervention from us other than adding the plumbing after the tank.

Cuprotype Copper based images were first mention Cuprotype 

Copper based images were first mentioned in the 1850’s according to an excellent article on alternativephotography.com (Go to @alternativephotography_com and click the link in their profile and go to “Latest Articles and Artists”. They’ve got a great article on the process.) 

One cool thing is it uses very similar chemistry to cyanotype, so if you’ve done that process, then cuprotype will come easily.  ONE NOTE:  it took 2 stops more light for cuprotype in my lightbox than cyanotype needed. So start there. 

Slide1:  11x14 cuprotype contact print from the same glass negative you’ve been seeing lately. When I printed that neg as a cyanotype, I needed 6 minutes in my lightbox, this cuprotype was exposed for 25 minutes. After exposure the prints are a mustard yellow color and don’t change much after an initial wash. I then toned this print with FeCN toner (see article) for 5 minutes yielding the color you see here. 

Slide2: exactly same as above but I followed the FeCN toning with a secondary toning with citric acid (see article). IRL the print is a bit more of a chocolate brown than it appears here. 

I’m not sure how I’ll use this process but I think the colors do have a place for certain images. 

Slides 3+ are some process videos (note that the colors throw off the iPhone’s white balance correction so some of the colors you see in the videos aren’t quite accurate)

That’s not a rocket taking off to the right of the silo, it’s probably chemical, but could be a spirit from another dimension. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I no longer question these things…

This silo installation was done almost exactly 5 years ago as part of the celebration for @firnewfarmartistscircle ‘s 15th year. This year we celebrate the 20th year of the artists group. (I’ve been a member of the group since 2012.)

The print on the silo is aging gracefully, getting even more beautiful as it ages. This will always be one of my favorite pieces that I’ve ever created. My undying thanks to @crowe.trish for the opportunity and their silo, and to @catherineolivia12 for being the absolute perfect model.

The first two slides are contact prints from 11x14 collodion negatives I shot last Wednesday in @shenandoahnps 
Nothing spectacular, but they turned out better than I thought. 

The rest of the slides are from this weekend with @eehpuhbuh and @reub.e.n  We printed printed printed some clothes….experimented….played…. learned some stuff….and have a few little problems we need to work out, but we also made some cool stuff 💙💙💙
